back to Decision Tree
Desired Goal or Outcome
Use the IPTC Core, IPTC Extenstion, or VRA Core, in Adobe Bridge to embed preparatory cataloging metadata in image files that can be exported to a spreadsheet for further editing and then imported to an editing tool or a database, or back into the image file – overwriting the original data.
Choice of Data Standard
You should be able to map the fields in your local database to IPTC Core, IPTC Extension, and especially VRA Core.
Choice of Tool
The VRA Metadata Palette contains fields appropriate for cultural heritage fields and the VRA Export-Import Tool allows you to export your pre-cataloging to an Excel spreadsheet. From the Excel Spreadsheet you can inspect your data, make corrections and import it into and edition tool or a database, or back into your image files. The spreadsheet offers a quick way to check the “health” of your data. Do the records look complete? Does the data need to be edited? When building a catalog record, you may wish to add additional layers of cataloging and/or administrative information.
Example
Image and metadata viewed in the VRA Metadata Palette 2018.

|
Exported metadata for Style/Period as it appears in an Excel spreadsheet where omissions and errors can be found easily. Note that data for Style/Period has been omitted.
|
|
Additional Style/Period data, including the name of the data value standard (AAT) and its identifying number have been entered into the spreadsheet.
|
|
The additional data has been imported back into the image file using the VRA Export-Import Tool.
